Horses have a way to represent wild, untamed freedom. And this is what drew Equinox's founder, Quebec born Jonathan Sills-Martel, to take riding classes in 2011.
In 2013, he starts trimming under tutoring from the local barn farrier and quickly develops a new passion!
After being introduced to the local farriers association (AMFQ), Jonathan volunteers at many events in order to pursue his learning.
During the summer of 2014, during a local farrier competition, Jonathan meets, Heartland Horseshoeing school founder, Chris Gregory FWCF and decides to enroll in the school for the upcoming class in one of the foremose horseshoeing schools in the USA.
In 2015, following months of hard work, Jonathan becomes a graduate of HHS.
Following school, Jonathan has been an apprentice with different local farriers, amongst which, Rémi Gauvin, CJF and Christian Roy, CF. This apprenticeship allowed him to build his knowledge and hone his skills.
In 2017, Jonathan Won the Novice division in the AMFQ's Master's Cup competition.
In 2018, Jonathan became a director on the board of the AMFQ. In 2019, he took charge of the administration and accounting of the association. A role he retired from in early 2023 to pursue professional development.
In the following years, he completed the Certified Farrier "CF" certification with the AFA in 2023, and translated to french Kayley McIntosh's book, The Farriers Handbook in 2025.
In 2025, Jonathan also earned the title of Div 2 Champion at the Ontario Horseshoeing Classic.
Currently, Jonathan is pursuing further certifications, including CJF with the AFA and AJFC with the AFTC.
